Rainy mornings in April.
President Obama is supposed to make a speech to NATO today about eliminating nuclear weapons.
The BBC commentator said that obviously he wanted to reduce weaponry in order to spend the money on his “other” plans: health care, energy, etc. This nuclear arsenal is expensive, after all, this pointy head pointed out.
I think President Obama saw the 1959 movie, “On the Beach” with Gregory Peck, Fred Astaire and Ava Gardner. A movie made from Nevil Shute’s novel about the final weeks of a global nuclear war had released so much radiation that it was just a question of time before the nuclear cloud spread and extinguished human life all over the planet. Gregory Peck, a captain of a nucleasr submarine, had taken a vote from his crew and they had decided to go back home to die. The scenes of the submarine’s periscope surfacing in San Francisco Bay and surveying the totally lifeless city was unforgettable.
Because of weather patterns in the novel, the last patch of earth with humans still alive was Australia. The final scene was a city square, cloudy as I remember it, empty with wind blowing debris down the vacant streets with a torn banner REPENT dragging on the ground.
O, yeah. I think eliminating nucelar weapons would save some money, Dr. BBCWhizBang. But, I think there may be a few other reasons behind this speech as well.

the ethereal quality of the photograph-wow. the clock with the yellow edge
gradation,(soft) contrasting with the yellow road lines in the foreground, and the telephone wires dissolving in the misty blue, the redpink glow of the carlights and the stoplights, sigh, it’s beautiful and seems so fitting with the words you’ve written. and the time is 6:37. the details fascinate me, thanks Pat!
You know, many people would just see another grey dull day, but you’ve pulled several fabulous photos out of the mist! I agree with tipota that this is very well done and illustrates your thoughts well.
On a related subject, it seems you have left the “fear” stage behind and are moving into a “give-’em-hell” mode. Bravo!
A terrible idea. As terrible as they come. Good thing my family has a fallout shelter . . .
Tipota, I think details are everything except when it comes to housecleaning. Thank YOU for always letting me know what strikes you about my posts!
Don, very astute you beach people…yes, the fear stage is evolving due to me taking some control (or illusion of it) and I think I’m entering the pissed off stage! Oi.
Hilarious, Chris…you know I exactly grew up next to a house that had a bomb shelter built with rod iron railings! Like rod iron railings were going to make it through the blast!! LOL, right there. I used to look out my window and go…Now, c’mon…even I know that’s not going to make it!
This photo is a great example of how a little contrast can make or break an image. If all the colours were vibrant the shot would’ve failed. Very nice!
