I tried to write about this yesterday and couldn’t. Even looking at these headlines and images makes my chest clutch. That we are four years out and still haven’t recovered from this catastrophe is shocking and maddening to me.
Stacie, I still can’t believe it happened never mind that four years later Mayor Nagin is still there! At least, Bush is gone. Seriously, this event and its aftermath cracked down the middle my sense of this country and who we are and what we could do. The election of ’08 went a good distance in repairing this fissure, but it still breaks through all the “noise” of other events. You should write about it. Not enough people do. Look at me? I could only post the headlines. I’m still tongue tied.
A tragedy — and shameful that so little has been done to help the less fortunate among the victims.
This event also was a warning how the complexity of our civilization makes us all more vulnerable to catastrophe and social collapse, whether caused by natural or human action. The public systems to aid recovery have been purposefully hobbled, and the private ones serve only those who can pay.
