The sun comes up every morning folks say. There is a constant is what they mean. They are reassuring themselves and me.
I listen and think, “Constant for them, perhaps, because they sleep late.” But, for the early morning photographer, first light looks different every day.
It is never the same. It changes every day and clouds make all the difference.
Today, I’m going to find that reassuring in my own weird way.

I too love the early mornings. Thanks for the photo.
I love that big glow emerging behind the cloudbank. Perfect in B&W. So what is that in the foreground? Might that be some of the snow you had up there?
Very Nice!
amazing dof!
Davis, we, the early morning birds, are special beings not known for our sartorial splendor, however. The other morning this guy emerges from the trees in what only could be described as New England Patriot pajamas and a orange hat. He’d been taking photos of the sunrise. I was laughing on the way home at his get up and then looked down. I had my coat on, but underneath…yep, flannel, blue stripes.
Oh, Don, you St. Croix azure blue guy, you. Yes, that might be a little bit of the snow!!
Thanks, rick! I just went to your site and saw the lovely Miss Columbia. I need your services to spruce me up on an early morning foray into the wilderness.
Olivier, welcome! I went to your ABOUT page and saw one of my favorite quotes about photography from Walker Evans. Your images are so fitting for that quote, too.
The glow of the huge mothership in the background, whirring and spinning this beautiful light.
Morning light owns the day- I love it too.
Every teacher of painting of light will talk about values and how to help see by comparing darks to mids to lights.
I think that’s exactly what you’ve done in this photo.
If Julian Schnabel can strut in his pajamas, you can tuck yours under your coat and drive around your town at 5:30 with impunity.
true, and true! As a confirmed reformed night owl, Your words are soooo true. It’s a photographer’s dream, the morning.
I love the light in your image, and the way the railings highlight it. Hope you didn’t get buried under snow
Let’s just say I hope this is how the world ends: in black and white, and with a bang. As usual, you blow my mind.
Chris
Hmmm. Even though it’s outdoors, this image makes me think of a light at the end of the tunnel. Unfortunately, it just ain’t there yet, but it will be.
Oh, Bonnie…mothership is so perfect. perfect perfect perfect.
Renee, the storm was 9 inches not 15! Yea!
Chris, this comment makes me want to put it on my book jacket, of course, one would need to have a book to have a book jacket, but you know what I mean.
Epic, I’m holding you to the words following “but”.
You know what I love about your pictures Pat? They are all so different and interesting. All unique.
I am finding it difficult when taking photos not to be technically good.. but to be visually good. Im not being creative. It bugs me. You are so visually creative.
Amber, my cousin in Florida is complaining that I take too many photographs with snow!!! Um, I live in New England!!
