On this day of infamy, Dec 7, when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor and President Roosevelt coined the term “day of infamy”, I read the news headlines 80 years later and the dread keeps dripping.
It is now a battle every day on my Dread Scale for the #1 concern: Pandemic. The Big Lie. Big Lie. Pandemic.
I am reading a book about an American woman who ended up in Germany and being “decapitated” literally on Hitler’s personal order. The German courts had been too lenient with her Nazi resistance efforts, apparently.
The author, Rebecca Donner, begins her book, “All the Frequent Troubles of Our Days” with the ’30s in Germany. The emergence of a man considered a cartoon of a man in the beginning (she’s got the documentation of newspaper cartoons to back it up) who emerges as a leader of Germany.

He fundraises today for the 2024 election with his oh-so-familiar delusion. He actually won the election were it not for massive voter fraud. The fact that he lost 63 legal challenges to this statement means nothing. Zero. 0️⃣
What amazes me to this day is that people who are not delusional carry his toxic self-serving brew until they believe it, too.
I have thought long and hard as to how this type of crude and oily salesman appeals to the republicans I know. They would under NO circumstances want their daughters to befriend or god forbid marry such a man. Nor would they invest a nickel in his branded steaks or water, or send their children to learn at his university (shuttered now after multiple lawsuits from students) or, the real test for some of his deep pocket water bearers, join his golf country club because of the stench. No, none of it would they do but they entrust him with our democracy? They end up carrying his toxic pail of delusions for him and now believe them?
This is his fundraising pitch for 2024.
Anyone who doesn’t think that there wasn’t massive voter fraud in the 2020 Presidential election is either very stupid, or very corrupt!

The woman in the book, Mildred Harnack, was born and bred in Milwaukee Wisconsin and moved to Berlin, Germany for a Ph.D. program in the early 30s. She watched the rise of the Nazi party and began secret meetings in her apartment that led to the largest resistance group in Berlin. She became a spy, couriering top-secret intelligence to Allies. She was arrested by Gestapo and a Nazi military court sentenced her to six years at a prison camp. But, Hitler overruled their decision and ordered her execution. On February 16, 1943, she was strapped to a guillotine and beheaded.
America, to paraphrase the great Hilary Mantel who had to deal with Henry VIII in her “Wolf Hall” trilogy, “if you can’t tell the truth at a beheading, when can you?”
I’m going to get the book out, I don’t know why because it’s just going to confirm what I already believe. Hope it’s interesting.
She is a wonderful writer and although a true story, her subject is a woman I knew nothing about so it comes at truths and beliefs we may have but through another person’s eye and experiences.
