It took a pandemic to cut my own hair. In 75 years, I never remember even trying to trim it.
So, this was big. I had waited almost 4 months to call my hairdresser. He had reopened in Mid-May. It was now July. I asked if he could cut my hair outside in the back of the salon. He said he’d cut my hair outside in the back of the salon if I was in the dumpster.
Ok. Plan B was he graciously said he would let me come in before the salon opened and no one else was there.
I appreciated that concession. I would not have gone otherwise.
Anyway, I just asked him to shape up the curly locks rather than cut them all off which was my pre-COVID style.
By the time I got home, I realized I wished I’d asked him to cut more.
So, I contemplated calling but thought “Jeez. He had me come in when no one was there but he was usually doing paperwork prior to opening the salon so this is a pain in the patootie.”
I decided. It was too much to return. He might indeed put me in the dumpster.
So, I decided to watch some YOUTUBE videos on cutting curly hair. My niece said a friend of hers cut her curly hair “dry” so she could see a clearer picture of what the cut was going to look like.
I was advised strongly NOT to use my sewing scissors so went out to get some hair scissors. Store after store was out of them. Apparently, cutting your own hair during a pandemic was discovered by many others before me.
I finally found a pair in a Walgreen’s drug store in another town. OK.
Back to a video and then, drum roll, I did it. I tried at first to follow the video and then just said the hell with it. Just started snipping like Edward Scissorhands.
I ended up looking ok if you have cataracts. Not bad at all if you have macular degeneration. But, hey! It’s not like my modeling days are over. I have no idea what the back looks like because I could not do that part without potentially severing a finger along with my hair. My arms were tired.
I’m posting a photo of what my self shorn hair looked like on the bathroom counter. If you look closely you can see my color hair when I was 25 and not 75.
