Do not tell anyone to grow up and be who they want to be. We have a pandemic of people who think they are heroes but are truly just dangerous.
Do you suppose someone told GOP Rep Paul Gosar, Hermann Göring, Erik Menendez, Kyle Rittenhouse they could be whoever they wanted to be when they grew up?
I have digested this week’s news through three new (to me) historical facts. One source was the book, “When We Cease to Understand the World” by Benjamin LaBatut.
He was short-listed for National Book Award in Non-Fiction but did not win. His title should win something as it captures beautifully how I feel every day I read what elected Congressional and Senate Republicans are doing and saying in public rather than in the corridors of mental hospitals where they should be placed for national security. But, is that too Stalinesque a response? Here are the three new to me facts.
- On the eve of the Nuremberg Trials in 1946, the allies gave a medical examination to Hermann Göring and noted that his fingernails and toenails were a “furious “red color.
- He had been taken into custody dragging a suitcase filled with 20K (as in twenty thousand) opiod pain killer capsules. Turns out he took 100 capsules a day to maintain his charming persona and physique.
- In 2016, someone from Argentina bought a huge cache of Nazi Memorabilia that included one pair of Göring’s silk underwear and one of his military uniforms (300K).
I didn’t even want to think about his silk underwear so for one of my daily drawings, I took a stab at his uniform pants with elastic waistband based on a historical photo ( Thank you, Jesus, Google did not have a photo of his undies) and another drawing of him as I imagine him dragging his suitcase filled with his “stuff” ( Mein Sachen) at his moment of capture. That phrase in German is all I have left of my former years of living in Heidelberg in 1972-1975.
The Republican Rittenhouse supporters are calling him a “hero” for defending himself by shooting dead two people and injuring another. Trump tweeted his support and of course said the trial was a witch hunt. When is Trump moving to Salem, Mass is my only question.
There is talk Republican congressional folks are going to offer him an internship instead of insurance coverage for mental health services.
Rep Gosar defends his posted video of a warrior (I guess that’s how he sees himself) decapitating AOC as a statement about differences of opinion about immigration and how “real patriots” may have to resort to violence.
He was censored by the House and stripped of his committees with only 2 Republican votes.
I presume the rest were taking target practice or sword fighting lessons.
I’d be laughing at myself a wee bit harder if I didn’t know that someone paid 4 thousand dollars for Hermann Göring’s silk underpants to keep the dream alive.
My country is filled with folks who would outbid one another for Trump’s boxers. Lindsay Graham would outbid them all.
America, the rabbit is sick. A line from last week’s episode of “Succession”. One of the best TV shows about abjectly hideous people who at least make me laugh.
The worst TV show about abjectly hideous people which never makes me laugh: The Morning Show on Apple TV. The finale had Jennifer Aniston with a horrendous case of Covid supposedly capable of doing a Zoom TV show from her “death bed” in her penthouse apartment with full make-up and rattling on about herself. I think these writers need to visit an emergency room.
This is why I am simply going to worry about inflation this week after reading another book that talked about inflation in Russia after WW1.

Worry about inflation and admire my antique hydrangeas in an antique umbrella stand.

Remember, stop telling people to grow up and be who they want to be.
