Saturday Night Live on 4/21/12 replayed the show with Daniel Radcliffe. They had one hilarious sketch after another but the one that hit a bit too close to home was called, “You can do anything”.
It was a support group of sorts for all those folks who regard themselves as talented because they have a dot com address and can press “publish” but not a single reason to feel they have talent. Kristin Wiig was a “photo blogger.” Ouch. O, my.
Several of my favorite lines: “my self esteem is through the roof because no one’s been truthful with me.”
Next favorite: “unearned confidence”.
The question was asked, “How did you get to be so sucky and not realize it?”
Daniel Radcliffe’s character’s niche and claim to fame was Irish Dancing and doing ancient Chinese calligraphy at the same time. Words cannot express how wonderful his rendition of those two unlikely and ridiculously paired things were. PS. The boy can truly dance but his calligraphy does indeed suck.
The next morning I got this quote from guru Seth Godin in my news feed from a social media specialist, Amy Porterfield, with many comments attached to it praising the sentiments. Seth Godin usually has short, non-gooey, practical bits of advice, and things to think about it. I subscribe to his blog. Amy Porterfield is a bona-fide expert in her field. I subscribe to her Facebook updates, too.
“How dare you settle for less when the world has made it so easy to be remarkable.”-Seth Godin.
So this quote and his recent promotion of what appears to be some sort of Kumbaya tour of togetherness–thousands paying hundreds of dollars to spend the day with him and be “together” with others-being-together with him I think is the essence. A bit of the creepy-ick factor to me, but, hey, I cringe when someone reaches out their peace giving mitt to me at a church service.
Since marketing is his niche, you can’t argue his logic. The honey pot allure of self-esteem workshops is power dollars from low hanging fruit. I’m sure it shall be successful.
This from someone who bought Anthony Robbins’ tapes in the 80’s (cassette tapes) 90’s (CD’s) and who had to slap myself silly to not buy the DVD set in 2003. I finally wrestled the plastic card from my hand and put the telephone down. Girl, this power-up stuff is like crack. I decided I’d do a DVD series called, “Marketing for Losers”. I never wrote it. Figures.
Anyway, I think I just found the reason we get to be so sucky and not realize it. Duh-oh. It’s what makes the world go ’round. We all want to be remarkable and some folks tell us it’s just so damn easy to be remarkable. Just follow the yellow brick road. Buy the DVD. Do it for three weeks. Listen to the Webinar. Spend the day with Seth. Go ahead. Wind at your back and all that.
This morning my road brought me to CVS and a rainy parking lot. I, of course, think it’s remarkable.
Now, watch the this skit. It’s free with just one advertisement!
