Damnation. I only saw Saul Leiter’s photographs of his NYC neighborhood in a retrospective the NYTimes did following his recent death. I took these photos (my own version of “street photography”) while stopped at intersections or in parking lots in Franklin several years ago . I only found them in a lost CD the same day I saw the NYTimes obit.
There’s a movie coming out about him, “In No Great Hurry”. Here’s the trailer. I loved how he opened up the interview saying, “I might not care for how I look these days because I think I looked better when I was younger but maybe I’m being unfair to how I look now. Who knows?”
His photographs inspire me to do more “street” photography and I’m especially grateful for his wise advice on how to look at an aging face and body. Plus, he liked to postpone things!! The older I get the more that seems like a virtue not a vice.
