Succession and Tater Tots

“You’re the number One Trending Topic ahead of Tater Tots”

Greg, “Succession”

“You’re the number Trending Topic ahead of Tater Tots”, was just one of the lines from episode 1 of season 3 of “Succession’ on HBO.

I am late to being a fangirl of this show. I tried one episode of season 1 and just said, “ick.” I didn’t “like” any of the characters. Not one.

But, my 21-year-old grand nephew, whose taste in TV and movies is superb, said, “It is, in my opinion, simultaneously the best drama and comedy on tv right now.” He didn’t try to talk me into giving it another try. Just stated his facts as he saw them.

The NYTIMES had an article about season 3 which inadvertently explained why I didn’t like any of the characters, (in a nutshell: they are unlikable at the root and “not real” people but we all recognize ourselves in them, if not their lifestyle) but, it also echoed my grand nephew on why it was worth watching.

So, this weekend, I tried again. Not with season 1 but with season II. I binged the whole season and finished just before an episode of season 3 aired on HBO.

I’m now a believer. My insistence on liking these characters got in my way.

The interesting thing is that this same trait did not get in the way of me being a wild fan of comedic genius, Armando Iannucci, who is responsible for “The Thick of It.” (On Hulu now) Which has one character, Peter Capaldi, who is the Pavorotti of The F word. Many of Succession’s characters seem to have been spun on the same wheel. Iannucci also created “VEEP” in the US and wrote the first two or three seasons before he left.

Next was “In the Loop” with James Gandolfini and one of the Succession actors (Karl) plays Donald Rumsfeld. I thought I’d fall off my chair. None of these folks you’d want coming to dinner, either.

Then, the movie, Death of Stalin. Believe me, you don’t want Stalin or any of these characters in your inner circle either.

So, if you are at all sensitive to the most corrosively bad language you are likely to hear ever in your life, you are going to hate these shows, and unfortunately, I’ll not be able to invite you to dinner, either.

That is if I ever invite anyone again in my lifetime to dinner. Colin Powell died today (RIP) from complications of COVID and he was fully vaccinated.

Jesus @#$**!! Christ. Do I need to translate? Where is Peter Capaldi when I need him?
