Unbearable Sweetness

Yesterday I wrote about bearing witness to the unbearable. Today, my gallery wrapped 30X32 image of two children who bring me joy and sometimes unbearable feelings of sweetness begins its journey from Barry, the Atlanta printer.

It shall arrive in time for the Memorial Weekend when they shall come to stay for three days. Kit’s Mom told me she’s been packed for two months. I shall hang it over the bed in the pumpkin room where they sleep.

Over the three days, we shall go to the pool to check on frogs, to a night game of the PAWSOX, (the Red Sox farm team) because Tommy tells me, “Pappy, I’m dreaming baseball!” One night we’ll go to a Japanese restaurant that cooks the food around a grill that swooshes fire and makes us duck our heads and we’ll go on Sunday into Boston to ride in the swan boats and on Monday to the local bowling alley with sturdy guard rails. Somewhere in there Kit will come flying in from the porch terrified saying “There’s a bee out there!” I’ll make them bacon pizza, their favorite, watch an on demand movie which they’ll have to poke me in the ribs or shake my neck to wake me from, and, then, we shall read “Bats at the Beach” a wonderfully illustrated story of how bats go swimming and have picnics and surf at night at the beach when everyone else is in bed. And, then, they too shall go to bed.

I won’t sleep a wink as I shall stand watch by their door looking for monsters.

I can’t wait.

  1. This has to be one of the sweetest and cutest photos I have ever seen! Am quite jealous of those two for they have an amazing Pappy in you… now I can’t wait either! It’s sounds so fantastically dreamy filled with awesome adventure and mischief!

  2. Arriving in a bat mobile! Now, that’s the kind of author I want to be. Whether it’s a children’s book or not!

  3. Sweet, sweet photo, Pat … and even sweeter plans for their visit. I’m planning for my niece to come spend a week with me this summer. We have different entertainments on tap, but the feeling will be just the same! You’re going to have such a lovely visit. May the time go s.l.o.w.l.y…
