Working, The Series #3: Free Towel Dry

dryingcarComp

This young man is the first person I asked if it would be alright to take his photo for my new series, “Working”.

So, now I have two images from the car wash.  Yesterday was my interpretive” shot.  Today, my straight shot.  Well, almost straight shot.

I took modern interpretive dance in college and was very good in the interpretation of “Sitting Down”.

I was forced to take it, just like Gregorian Chant.  Oh, yeah.  You read that right, “Gregorian Chant” was a requirement in order to graduate.  I flunked it the first time around in sophomore year and forgot about it.

Then, senior year there I was spring semester sitting in that blasted auditorium taking it again because the Dean of Students had called my father and told him I was not going to graduate if I didn’t complete the chant requirement.

I’m not bitter.

I’m interpretive.

  1. crack me up! the word “free” blasting from the sign, the idea of it, too funny. as if getting dried isnt part of washing (hello customer, you pay for the wash but the drying, lucky you, is FREE! ha ha) and in this case your cheerful dryer (by hand, a skill that i imagine must be very well paid) is an adolescent
who looks as if he is perfecting the skill every time he dries a car anew- note the patient lockjaw, the intent devotion to the task at hand, the oversized hat, the wider-than-ten-arms sleeves.
delightful to pause here on this sunday morning!

  2. Wax on, wax off!

People shots have so much information in them for those who are into “reading” images.

Are you familiar with Sebastião Salgado’s work. If you aren’t, here’s a link to one of his more famous images:

I was over at a friend’s place last night and they had a whole coffee table book of his stuff. I was familiar with his famous images but I was blown away by just about every shot in the book.

  3. What day of the week is it today? I’m so into our challenge that I don’t know what day it is. How does Wednesday sound to you for our weekly match up? I like the weekly idea. I can pile up some images during the week and then hit you with my best shot each Wednesday. Be afraid. Yesterday, I had an entire afternoon to walk the streets of San Francisco with my camera. The light was great, and there were lots and lots of people.

  4. Wednesday, it is. Light? People? And, San Francisco??? Jaysus. And, you say you don’t have an advantage? No matter. Be not afraid, Pat, you shall drive him to greatness and make a stop or two along the way yourself. Of course, I may never leave the car wash, but so be it.

  5. I always did kinda shy away from the plain, “say cheese!” picture. People are so much better when they are at their candidness. (is that a word?)
